Root Canal Treatment
Long-term decay, cracking, or deep damage can affect the pulp located inside the tooth. When the pulp is inflamed or infected, the tooth may ache, numbness when eating or drinking, or more pain at night. If left untreated, the condition can spread and affect the tissue around the root.
Root canal treatment removes damaged pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals the root canal. Helps control inflammation and retains real teeth if they are still resilient.
When is root canal treatment needed?
It is not every tooth decay or toothache that requires root canal treatment. This method is usually performed when the decay has spread to the pulp or pulp is inflamed, infection caused by tooth decay, cracked teeth or injury. Some of the signs that may be encountered are prolonged toothache, throbbing pain, numbness when eating hot or cold food, pain when biting, or a more pronounced pain at night. In some cases, teeth may change color or appear pimples on the gums near the roots.
However, the level of pain does not always accurately reflect the condition of the marrow. There are teeth that have been damaged by the pulp but the symptoms are not obvious. Therefore, the doctor needs to check and may order an X-ray to evaluate before giving treatment direction.
Removal of the inflamed marrow
When determining the need for root canal treatment, the doctor will create a path inside the tooth to access the root canal. The inflamed or infected part of the marrow is removed, and then the root canals are cleaned to remove the remaining damaged tissue and bacteria.
Depending on the structure of each tooth, the number and shape of the root canal may vary. Therefore, the doctor needs to clean each root canal carefully before moving on to the sealing step. After cleaning, the root canal is sealed with a specialized material. This step helps to limit bacteria and fluid in the oral cavity from entering back into the teeth.
Retaining real teeth instead of removing them
When the pulp has been damaged, many people think that tooth extraction is the quickest solution. However, if the root and tooth structure are still eligible for recovery, root canal treatment can help retain the real tooth. After treatment, the teeth can still be used for chewing. However, because the internal nourishing pulp has been lost, the teeth can become more brittle and more prone to cracking if the rest of the tooth tissue is not strong enough.
Therefore, after root canal treatment, the doctor will re-evaluate the remaining teeth to see if further restoration with fillings or crowns is needed. Proper restoration helps to better protect the teeth during chewing.
